About
A Little Happiness, One Stitch at a Time
Hello, I’m Jo, the maker behind A Thread of Happy. From my home in Darlington, I create cheerful machine-embroidered gifts, decorations and keepsakes, each made with care and a little personality.
Where It All Began
My creative journey started in 2012, while I was on long-term sick leave from my job in retail. My daughter was struggling with nightmares after an electric shock, and I wanted to find something that might bring her a little comfort.
When I couldn’t find the dream catcher I had in mind, I decided to make one myself. I hadn’t considered myself particularly crafty before, so there was plenty of learning as I went. But seeing her smile when it was finished made every bit of effort worthwhile.
My son soon asked for one too, and those first two creations opened the door to something unexpected: a love of making.
Before long, I was experimenting with beads, charms and different materials, creating bracelets, keyrings and all sorts of little gifts. Each new idea taught me something, and there always seemed to be another project I wanted to try.
Finding My Love of Embroidery
As my interest in crafting grew, I began dreaming of having an embroidery machine. For a long time, it felt out of reach, but eventually that wish became a reality.
In 2021, machine embroidery became the main focus of my work. There’s something lovely about watching a design take shape, stitch by stitch, and turning an idea into something you can hold, use or give to someone special.
Living with illness means that creating also has a deeper place in my life. It gives me focus, keeps my mind occupied and brings a sense of purpose and achievement. Knowing that something I’ve made might brighten another person’s day adds even more meaning to it.
Gifts with a Little Personality
I’ve never been someone who can settle on making just one kind of thing. My collections include embroidered keyrings, bag charms, bookmarks, needle minders, heart hangers, hanging decorations and decorative pieces for the home, alongside plenty of other ideas that catch my imagination.
Some designs offer encouragement, some celebrate a special connection, and others are playful or simply useful. What brings them together is my hope that they will make someone smile.
I also enjoy adding personal touches through colour choices and wording on selected designs. If you have a custom idea, you’re welcome to get in touch, and I’ll be happy to see what might be possible.
Why A Thread of Happy?
The name brings together the embroidery thread at the heart of my work and the little moments of happiness I hope my creations carry with them.
Every piece is made by me at home in Darlington. Whether I’m making a single keepsake or a coordinating collection, I give care and attention to the details, from choosing the colours to adding the finishing touches.
Thank you for visiting and taking an interest in my small business. Every order, lovely message and bit of support means so much to me.
I hope you find something here that makes you laugh, helps you say something thoughtful or brings a little happy to your day.
Thoughtful machine embroidery, made to bring a little happy.
